Plans are being drawn up in Colombia for a number of new tertiary roads in Valle del Cauca Department. A new highway will be built in Valle del Cauca department, while a new road will improve connections between Mulalo and Loboguerrero.
Construction will commence on a major highway project in Colombia in the first quarter of 2016. The project for the Pacifico 1 road will be carried out by Colombian construction consortium Concesionaria Vial del Pacifico (Covipacifico). The commencement of construction is dependent on environmental licenses and land purchases however. The construction work will take five years to compete. In Colombia a consortium will carry out the Perimetral Oriental road contract. The US$463.4 million contract is for a 153km section of road connecting Cundinamarca and Meta, which when complete will cut journey times by two hours compared with the current route. The consortium comprises Israeli company Shikun & Binui and local firm Grodco and Colombiana Inversiones en Infraestructura, which is owned by Spanish company Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC). Colombia's strong focus on infrastructure development from 2011-2017 has seen the country make vast improvements to its road network. In all the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) has invested US$7.94 billion in the construction of 1,435km of new roads as well as over 200 new bridges. Colombia’s capital Bogota has benefited from a series of transport projects during this period. Meanwhile four highway projects will improve Bogota’s connections with the rest of the country.
Motorbike safety has been set as a priority in Colombia, which has identified key risk factors for the country’s many motorcycle riders. Some 4.5 million people use motorcycles/day for transport in the country, according to official studies. To improve safety, plans are being considered by the country’s Transport Ministry for motorcycle only lanes. A pilot will be carried out in Cauca Valley shortly. Motorcycle dealers supply a helmet along with each motorbike they sell.
