Colombia tunnel delays continue

Further delays have hit the project to build the La Linea Road Tunnel in Colombia. As a result the tunnel will not be open to traffic until the first half of 2018. This is the latest in a series of delays that have held back the opening of the tunnel. Previous delays have been caused by the discovery of geological conditions that were far more challenging than originally expected as well as problems over insurance cover for the construction firms. Further delays have hit the project to build the La Linea Road Tunnel in Colombia. As a result the tunnel will not be open to traffic until the first half of 2018. This is the latest in a series of delays that have held back the opening of the tunnel. Previous delays have been caused by the discovery of geological conditions that were far more challenging than originally expected as well as problems over insurance cover for the construction firms. When open to traffic the new link will stretch 8.6km and will replace a dangerous mountain pass. The western end of the tunnel will be around 2,400m above sea level, with the eastern end around 2,500m above sea level.

A strike by truck drivers meant that supplies of construction materials were halted, adding to previous delays.     Work on the La Linea Tunnel project in Colombia has cost considerably more than first anticipated. The National Road Institute (Invias) says that the bill so far tops US$774 million. Extra costs of around $281.5 million have been incurred due to the need to drive a pilot tunnel as well as for three additional tunnel stretches as well as bridges along the approaches to the main tunnel.
