Horizons software is helping Telford and Wrekin Council improve highway asset management processes

The visualised asset management solution from Yotta is being used to provide access to essential highway data. Future targets for this technology solution include the addition of asset inventory data and integration with other related service areas including development control, street works and drainage.

The body was coming to the end of its previous contract for managing and utilising condition data and was looking for a newer and more sophisticated system that could deliver efficiency gains while taking into account the review of funding formulae for highway maintenance. Telford and Wrekin Council identified new data and software handling technology would help optimise asset management processes. Trials with the package showed that it offered fast access to information and allowed spatial analysis of data to feed into prioritisation and forward planning programmes.

The Horizons solution is initially hosting Telford and Wrekin Council’s existing highway condition data. Once calibrated to the network, Horizons will also be used to develop treatment strategies, life cycle planning and whole of life costing. The council also plans to use Horizons to develop a forward works programme for the improved delivery of highway maintenance.

Horizons is a visualised Software-as-a-Service (“SaaS”) asset management platform designed to make it easier for asset managers to visualise, manage and optimise all their asset management strategies and records in a unique and effective way using a single cloud-based solution.

Managing utility works effectively is important, given that digging up roads and then patching them can dramatically cut the life of a road surface. New software tools make this process easier to manage effectively and Bentley Systems is extending its Expert Designer V8i package to include water, gas, and communications infrastructure, in addition to electric utilities. This allows utility firms and engineering contractors using Expert Designer V8i to boost the efficiency of utility network design projects.

Integrated construction software offers an effective planning solution - *Mark Nichols writes. In a world where resources are limited, 20 year designing and building in a sustainable way is more critical than ever. By employing today's software tools it is possible to reduce the total cost of construction of a new highway, while reducing operating costs and environmental impacts. The path to achieving the greatest gains is to take a holistic approach to the plan, design, construct and operate process from t
