The construction project for the new Polcevera Viaduct is a source of pride for Italy in these difficult times, and the completion of the deck structure has been a cause for celebration.
A new bridge will be built in Russia’s North-West region. The bridge will span the Sheksna River at Cherepovets. The project is expected to cost US$247.5 million. Preparatory works will commence during 2019 and the approach roads to the link are being improved. The 1.13km bridge will be the longest in the Vologda Region and should be ready by 2022. A new 8km southern bypass for Cherepovets with three lanes in either direction will also be built as part of a wider plan to improve transport for the city.
Controls Group has relocated from its historic base in Cernusco sul Naviflio to a new facility in the small town of Liscate, 17km from the centre of Milan at the intersection of two new motorway networks. Twice the size of the previous premises, the new building has an internal area of 8,000m2 and will provide space for research and development, production, logistics and an extensive visitor area for demonstrations and training.

Approval has been given for the project to build a new parallel link for the Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland. The second road tunnel has been given the go ahead after 57% of Swiss subjects who voted in a referendum backed the plans. Construction of the new tunnel will start in 2020 and will end in 2027. In addition, the project calls for the current Gotthard road tunnel to be closed for three years for renovation work so as to bring it up to the latest safety requirements. Both tunnels will be open from 2030
A new and more compact slipform paver is being introduced by Guntert & Zimmerman, widening the firm’s range of models. The company has been known in the past for its large slipform pavers used in road and airport runway jobs but in recent years has developed smaller and more compact units. The S400 shares many of its features with the existing S600, which was previously the most compact model in the line-up. The firm’s German representative, Peter Hedke said, “It’s the smallest machine we’ve ever built.”
