French president Nicolas Sarkozy, during a ceremony highlighting road safety which rewards municipalities and departments for their efforts in the fight against road accidents, has announced that from spring next year, every car in France will have to carry a breathalyser.

Concern has been raised at the risks faced by older drivers following the publication of a report produced jointly by research group TRIP and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). The report reveals that older drivers are more likely to be killed in intersection crashes than young drivers. Discussions are underway in Switzerland at present over options for maintaining and upgrading the Gotthard Road Tunnel in the 2020-2025 period.
