A joint venture between Phuong Thanh Investment and Construction (Phuong Thanh) and Cong Thanh Investment and Construction (Cong Thanh) has received an investment licence from Quang Ninh province, Vietnam to upgrade the National Highway 18's Ha Long-Mong Duong section.

The governor of the US state New York, Andrew Cuomo, said he wants to spend US$22 billion over the next five year on maintaining aging roads and bridges. Egis Projects and its partner Fulton Hogan Construction have won a major contract for the operation and maintenance of the WestConnex highway link in New South Wales Australia. The package was awarded by Sydney Motorway Corporation (SMC) to Fulton Hogan Egis O&M (FHEO&M). The partners hold equal 50% shares in the project. Egis has its share in the Australian project through its Australian subsidiary Egis Projects Asia Pacific.

A 100-year-old Parker truss bridge in western Canada had no official name until its 90th birthday, in 2007. Now, The Traffic Bridge – across the South Saskatchewan River in the city of Saskatoon - is no more, after its demolition earlier this month.

The Traffic Bridge, nearly 6m wide and 290m long and took a year to build, and was Saskatoon’s first bridge across the river when it opened in 1907. The bridge was built by Winnipeg city-based John D. Gunn and Sons.

In the Algerian province of Oran, construction of the second ring road linking Belgaid to El-Kerma is 60% complete and should be open by June. The cost of building the Padma Bridge in Bangladesh will be nearly three times the US$2.61 billion estimated in 2011. Also on the rise is the cost of flood prevention work in the form of levee construction – called river training in Bangladesh. The addition of 1.3km of work at the Mawa end of the bridge means the total cost is now $1.2 billion, up from $1.1 billion. A bridge demolition project is being carried out in Boise, the capital of US state Idaho.  Work is being carried out on the removal of the Broadway Avenue Bridge. The project also includes upgrades to the stretch of road that connects University Drive and Front Street in the city. A fleet of excavators fitted with demolition attachments is being used to remove the old structure and the new link will not be ready until the third quarter of 2016. Idaho Department of Transportation has set a series of diversions in place in the meantime.

Strong measures in Spain have helped reduce the country’s road fatality rate enormously in recent years.
