Some people should never be allowed behind controls of an excavator, especially if there is water nearby.

What is it about water that attracts certain people? Perhaps, if you are an excavator operator, it is the challenge of, say, trying to float? Or maybe it’s the skill required to manoeuvre the machine and yourself out of a quagmire?

At the least, an operator loses their machine. At worst, they lose two machines – theirs and another one that came to the rescue, and whose operator should also have known better.

Construction software solutions provider Bentley Systems announced that its OpenRoads Designer CONNECT Edition will be available from December. The contract for a diverging diamond interchange (DDI) has been awarded in the US state of Virginia. The project will cost close to US$100 million and will be built in Stafford County. The contract will be handled by Shirley Contracting Company, of Lorton. The new DDI facility will replace the existing Interstate 95/Route 630 (Courthouse Road) interchange. German transport infrastructure financing company VIFG, which is 100% owned by the German federal government, is to take over the planning and construction of motorways. According to the official website of the VIFG, planning and construction is done mostly be state governments. The VIFG has promised more transparency of road contracts.

The Czech government has set the 2017 budget for the Transport Infrastructure Fund at €3.03 billion. The budget includes European Union subsidies of just over €1.1 billion and a state budget contribution of €1.9 billion. The largest share of the funds will go towards construction and repair of roads, with nearly €1.7 billion allocated to the state road and motorway management company RSD. Turkey will open tenders this month for a bridge at the southwestern end of the Sea of Marmara and around 200km south of Istanbul. The Canakkale 1915 Bridge will span the Dardanelles Strait close to the city of Canakkale and where ferries cross the stretch of water. The UK government must understand that pulling out of the European Union will have consequences for the manufacturing sector and should be ready to help. “A lot of EU regulation has been tough but at least we know what is,” said Rob Oliver, chief executive of the UK’s Construction Equipment Association. Oliver, speaking at last week’s one-day conference in London, warned the government against introducing tougher regulations than the EU has done.
