Construction of the US$2.1 billion Gordie Howe International Bridge is expected to start in late 2018, according to the authority in charge of the project. The Canadian province of Quebec plans to build a US$219 million bridge across the St Lawrence River alongside the existing Mercier Bridge in the city of Montreal. Provincial government cabinet ministers Pierre Moreau and Geoff Kelley confirmed that a new bridge is forthcoming, but gave schedule for procurement or construction start, according to local media. Construction is underway on a key highway link in the UAE. The project is costing close to US$218 million and connects Jumeirah district with the Parallel Roads and Al Khail Road. One of the significant portions of the work is the construction of a flyover at the intersection of the First Al-Khalil Street and Latifa Bint Hamdan. A new highway link is planned for South Eastern Nigeria. The US$154.4 million project will connect Odukpani Itu in Cross River State with Ikot Ekpene in Akwa Ibome State. Approval for the project has been given by Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC). The link will provide a major new highway connection for Nigeria’s South Eastern region, improving transport between Calabar through to the rest of the country. Up to US$571 million (NZ$812 million) is being provided by the New Zealand Government to repair an earthquake damaged stretch of State Highway 1 (SH1). The section being repaired lies between Christchurch and Picton and was heavile damaged by the earthquake that struck in November 2016. A portion of the necessary repair work has already been carried out. Some additional funding will be provided by New Zealand’s National Land Transport Fund to pay for further road repair works to other coastal connections.

Plans in the Philippines are being set out for a highway and bridge mega-project. The proposals call for a 388km highway from Northern Samar to Lucena, Quezon Province. The bridge would span the San Bernardino Strait and connect Allen in Northern Samar Province on Samar Island with Matnog on the Bicol Peninsula in Sorsogon Province. Work is set to commence on a new bypass in Australia’s Victoria State in 2019, with the work planned for completion in 2022. The new Mordialloc Bypass will run from the existing Dingley Bypass to the Mornington Peninsula Freeway. The project is expected to cost US$226.3 million (A$300 million).

Romania’s Government is evaluating plans for a new bridge project, which would span the River Danube. The project has an estimated cost of nearly €440 million. The tender process is being opened by the Romanian National Agency for the Administration of Road Infrastructure (CNAIR). The bridge would be constructed in Romania’s Dobrogea Region.
