Intense skating

A Russian skateboarder had a very close call when being filmed in a high speed stunt by a friend. The skateboarder was descending a twisty road and travelling at some speed but misjudged a corner, cutting it too tightly and crashing head-on into an oncoming car. Luckily he did not suffer injuries more serious than cuts and bruises as well as a dented ego and the vehicle was also undamaged.

One of the applications for LIDAR is to make high resolution 3-D maps. Self-driving cars are pre-loaded with a LIDAR map of the trials area in which they are permitted to fully self-drive themselves. The cars also have their own LIDAR scanner which captures a real-time LIDAR view of the vehicle’s surroundings. The fully autonomous driving system within these prototype cars compares the real-time LIDAR view against the pre-loaded LIDAR map to significantly increase the accuracy of their self-positioning

New road safety videos made in France and Finland are giving strong messages on road safety. The new French video, launched in February, shows in bleak, close-up images the impact of road collisions on several individuals who suffered life changing injuries, and their families. It follows a number of increasingly shocking films released in recent months that have included a class of primary school children wiped out by a car, a fake ‘funeral’ for speeding motorists and a film released by police showing the moments leading up to a real, fatal motorcycle collision.
