Dust reduction with Bomag Ion Dust Shield for cold planers

A dust up: Bomag Ion Dust Shield

172 Bomag is presenting its Ion Dust Shield solution for harmful fine dust that is increasingly a problem for operators of cold planers, especially in all urban areas.

At a diameter of less than 10µm, it can be inhaled. But if it is even smaller, below 2.5µm, this fine particulate can seriously damage lungs.

To render it harmless, Bomag’s Dust Shield - which sits neatly along and atop the planer’s conveyor unit - converts the fine particulate into larger-diameter matter, called flakes. This flocculated matter is less dangerous and easily deposited back on the conveyor for harmless disposal with the rest of the milled material.

The particulate matter is transported through an electric field where it becomes ionised and, now that it is positively charged, is attracted to a negative housing where it collects into larger matter.

Bomag says the efficiency of the Ion Dust Shield has been confirmed by the Institute for Hazardous Materials Research at Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany. More than 80% of fine particulates are bound electrostatically and rendered harmless.

BOMAG has developed a novel system for reducing dust levels around its milling machines. Called the Ion Dust Shield, this patented system uses ionisation to positively charge dust particles from milled cuttings. The firm says that current dust extraction technology for milling machines focuses on minimising dust levels around the operator. These ensure that the working area is kept free from dust, with this retrieved material then being exhausted to the discharge conveyor, typically at a height of around 5m

Bomag launches its new BM/65 series of cold planers in early September 2021. With a CECE operating weight of only 27 tonnes, the BM 2000/65 is the lightest planer currently available in the 2-metre class. Its low weight achieved by the special lightweight design and the shorter conveyor belt now make the planers even more flexible to use. When it comes to efficiency, ease of operation and work safety, the new generation of planers features numerous innovative details
