Work is progressing on the new highway being constructed in Turkey to connect commercial centre Istanbul with the coastal city of İzmir. Work is progressing on the new highway being constructed in Turkey to connect commercial centre Istanbul with the coastal city of İzmir. This complex highway project runs from the north to the south of the country and includes several novel structures along the route, including the suspension Bridge 1. The project forms part of the Trans European North-South Motorway Project (TEM) and is of international importance as a trade route. The new suspension bridge will reduce traffic volumes on the existing Istanbul to Bursa and İzmir route. When complete the new bridge will also help reduce travel distances between the cities.

  • Italy: Astaldi takes out loan for Turkish motorway project

    Italian civil engineering group Astaldi has underwritten a €4.5 billion (US$5 billion) loan towards the Turkish motorway project of Gebze-Orhangazi-Izmir, which is worth an overall €5.65 billion ($6.4 billion).     A new tunnel will connect the coastal town of Rize with Erzurum in Turkey. The 14.3km Ovit Tunnel is costing US$270.3 million to construct and is due to open to traffic in 2016. Opening the tunnel will reduce the journey time between Rize and Erzurum as the new route will cut the distance from 250-200km.
