Poland's big transport plans

The European Investment Bank (EIB) looks likely to grant Poland a loan of €1.6 billion to carry out several key infrastructure projects. Some of the money will be used to finance the A2 highway from Lodz to Warsaw; Warsaw's southern ring road and a 50km section of the A4 highway to link with Germany.

The 1054 European Investment Bank (EIB) looks likely to grant Poland a loan of €1.6 billion to carry out several key infrastructure projects.

Some of the money will be used to finance the A2 highway from Lodz to Warsaw; Warsaw's southern ring road and a 50km section of the A4 highway to link with Germany.

The loan will help patch up the finances of the 3519 Polish General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) but will not solve all of its financial problems. GDDKiA still needs additional resources to fund land purchases and preparation of other road projects.

Financing for a €598 million road repair project in Poland may come from the EIB: GDDKiA is in talks with the organisation regarding a loan for a project to repair the surface of some 1,000km of national roads, a project that will be carried out independently of the government's road upgrade programme.

Meanwhile GDDKiA is calling for bids to build a new section of the A4 highway and an S19 dual carriageway section around the city of Rzeszow. The winning bidder will be given 18 months to complete the work.

Bidding for Poland's A2 highway project has seen tenders being submitted by Chinese and Indian contractors, as well as by companies in Europe. In all, 18 companies have submitted offers for the construction of each of five sections of the Strykow-Konotopa A2 highway. Construction work is due to begin in 2010 and scheduled for completion in May 2012.

The Polish Government is investing €230.2 million in improving local roads during 2008-11. Under the programme, each local authority can apply for funding over a period of three years, provided that it can provide the same amount of money from its own budget.

Meanwhile 14 companies and consortia are submitting bids for ring road projects around two Polish towns, Wisniow and Zambrow, worth a total of €114.52 million.
