In Uganda bidding is now underway for the new expressway project to improve transport between capital Kampala and the industrial city of Jinja. The project for the 95km section of road is expected to cost US$1 billion to construct. The contract is being offered under the design, finance, build and operate model, with the route then being handed back to the Ugandan Government once the agreed concession period is complete. The Northern Spire bridge in Sunderland, northern England, has beaten off stiff competition to win another national construction and engineering award.
The Spire, which opened in August this year at a cost of €132 million, was named Project of the Year: Engineering, Construction and Infrastructure 2018 by the UK’s Association for Project Management.
The award is the latest honour for Sunderland’s 105m-tall cable-stayed bridge which links Castletown on the north side of the River Wear with Pallion.
The European Union is to help finance studies for the northern border section of the Ionian Highway in Greece. Some €1.56 million is being provided through the TEN-T Programme to help pay for a series of studies required to prepare for the project’s tender process. The tender for Lodz's €372 million Western Ring-Road (Zachodnia Obwodnica Lodzi) has attracted 17 bidders, according to Polish media.
Construction has been split into two parts: a 12.2km section between the Lodz-Lublinek junction and the Lodz Teofilow junction and a section of 16.3km section from Lodz Teofilow to Slowik, excluding the Emilia junction.
