New tolled highways planned for South Africa

The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) is planning the construction of a further five toll roads. A feasibility study is underway for the N12 route connecting Kimberley with Johannesburg, the Limpopo N1 Botlokwa Interchange, the N3 road from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, the N1 connecting Kroonstad to Winburg and a N1 ring road at Musina.

    Work is underway on the Causeway Upgrade Project in New Zealand. The US$183.3 million (NZ$220 million) contract was awarded by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA). The route forms part of State Highway 16, with the fork being part of Auckland's Western Ring Route.   • South Korea highway deals struck

    In South Korea a contractor has been awarded the deal to construct and important new stretch of highway. The US$263.3 million deal is for a section of the Seoul-Sejong expressway. Hanwha Engineering & Construction (Hanwha E&C) will construct the section of the route in Gyeonggi Province. In all the new route will measure some 129km when complete and will connect Guri in Gyeonggi Province to Sejong. This will be one of several new highways running from north to south in South Korea.

  • Delayed ring road due for completion

    In Romania, modernisation of capital Bucharest’s ring road is now due for completion in 2012. The delay has been caused by a lack of funds. Upgrading of the sections between DN7 and DN1A and DN1A (Mogosoaia)and DN1 (Otopeni) started in 2007 and some 51km have been improved so far. The total length of the ring road will be 71km when it is complete. Tenders still have to be launched for two more sections of the ring road, the 11km DN2/A2 stretch and the 8.6km A1/DN7 section.   • Serbia highway deals being planned

    Plans are in hand in Serbia to build new highway links, including routes joining with neighbouring Montenegro.
