Mozambique’s road network is to receive international funding for various projects. The 304km road connecting Cuamba and Lichinga in Niassa province will be improved under the plan.
Financing worth US$150 million is being provided by the World Bank, which will be used to help pay for road development work in Mozambique. The funding will be aimed at upgrades to roads in Mozambique’s Nampula Province and Zambezia Province. One of the key upgrades will be to a 70km section of the road connecting Namacurra with Quelimane. The aim of the work is to improve transport for the agricultural sector in the respective provinces.
Three new bridges will be constructed the port city of Pemba in Mozambique. Funding for the bridges is being provided by Japan, following the conclusion of successful discussions with its government and the Mozambique Government. The bridges will help to improve the links between Pemba and the district of Palma, which lies to the north of the city. Japan will also assist in developing a transport system for Mozambique’s capital, Maputo.
Work is commencing to repair and upgrade Mozambique’s National Road 6 in Sofala Province. The work will take three years to complete and will cost some US$400 million. The project is being carried out by Chinese contractor Anhui Foreign Economic Construction. The upgrades include widening the route, with the stretch between Dondo and Beira being a focus for improvement. The new Mozambique to Malawi highway connection will improve rtade and transport between the neighbouring nations. Phase II of the project for Integrated Development of the Milange – Mocuba Corridor is now commencing and plans are in hand for work to upgrade trunk road N 11.
