Morocco continues to develop highways

Morocco’s highway network continues to improve and develop, with new sections and connections being opened.

Morocco’s highway network continues to improve and develop, with new sections and connections being opened. A 16.5km stretch of the Casablanca-Rabat highway is one of the latest to be opened to traffic. The project is now around 75% complete, with over 42km of the work having been finished. The latest stretch opened features three-lanes in either direction.

    Morocco is working on a new highway development programme. This calls for the building of 1,384km of highway routes, in addition to the existing road links. In all the work is expected to cost in excess of US$7.9 billion. The work includes building 10 key stretches of highway. Some of the key routes to be upgraded will be: Beni Mellal and Marrakech; Tangier and Tetouan; Rabat to Casablanca and Berrechid; Berrechid and El Jadida; Fez to Tangier.

    The construction of a new interchange to the south east of Casablanca in Morocco will make a substantial reduction in traffic congestion when it is complete. Work started on the interchange in February of this year, once of several major road projects being carried out in the area around the city. The work is expected to take 32 months to complete.
