Key Polish infrastructure project delivered 6 months ahead of schedule

Poland's most important infrastructure project of the past few years, a new 106 km section of the A2 motorway Segment II between Owiecko on the German border and Nowy Tomyol, opened this week, six months ahead of schedule.

Poland’s most important infrastructure project of the past few years, a new 106 km section of the A2 motorway Segment II between Œwiecko on the German border and Nowy Tomyœl, opened this week, six months ahead of schedule. Part of the Trans-European Network Berlin-Warsaw-Minsk-Moscow route, the €1.3 billion (US$1.75 billion) project was delivered as a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) by the project company, 3533 Autostrada Wielkopolska SA II.

A 945 Strabag-led consortium was commissioned to build the 106 km section of motorway between the summer of 2009 and the autumn of 2011. More than 90 per cent of the construction works were carried out by Strabag, making this the largest single order in the company’s history.

Inauguration of the new section was attended by VIPs from politics and business, including Polish president Bronis³aw Komorowski and the minister president of the German state of Brandenburg, Matthias Platzek. The new motorway section had originally been planned to open in the middle of May, 2012, and charge a per-kilometre toll but it will remain free of charge to use for the next six months.
