Kenya’s improving road safety sees casualty figures fall

Kenya’s gains in road safety are helping to see a reduction in casualties. Road traffic deaths for 2017 dropped by 1.6% to 2,919 compared with the 2,965 fatalities recorded in 2016. However, there is concern at the high number of crashes on some sections of Kenya’s road network and that the number of danger points on the network appears to be increasing. Kenya’s gains in road safety are helping to see a reduction in casualties. Road traffic deaths for 2017 dropped by 1.6% to 2,919 compared with the 2,965 fatalities recorded in 2016. However, there is concern at the high number of crashes on some sections of Kenya’s road network and that the number of danger points on the network appears to be increasing. There are now 273 road sections noted as having a particularly high crash rate, compared with 166 five years ago. Kenya’s congested capital Nairobi has 70 of the country’s noted dangerous road stretches, according to a study from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

    Provisional figures available from the UK’s Department for Transport reveal a drop in road fatalities in 2012 compared with the previous year. There were 1,754 fatalities in 2012, an 8% drop from 2011 according to the DfT information.     A very different road safety picture is emerging in two European nations, France and Germany. In France, the road fatality rate fell 4.7% for the month of June 2012, compared with the same period in the previous year. Some 320 people were killed on French roads in June 2012. In May 2012, the road death rate in France was only 0.9% lower than for the same period in the previous year. But in April 2012 the road death rate dropped 22.2% compared with 2011, 9% in March and 25.3% in February.
