The German province of Baden- Württemberg has issued a list of 20 ready to be built federal trunk road projects worth a combined US$1.01billion (€800mn).The first five could be started in 2014 and the next five in 2015 or 2016.
Köster and Baresel have been awarded the contract for the construction of the 4.2km long Hirschhagen tunnel in the German federal state of Hesse. Since the contract worth around US$ 335.14 million (€247mn) has been signed, the construction of what will be the longest road tunnel in Hesse could start in spring 2013. The Hirschhagen tunnel is part of the A44 motorway between Kassel and Eisenach. If all goes as planned, the tunnel is due to be opened for traffic at the beginning of 2018.
In Kenya a major road building programme has been announced. The Kenyan Government has unveiled plans to construct some 10,000km of roads. The work will be carried out in three phases over a period of five years. The first phase will involve building some 2,000km of roads, with this work being carried out from 2014-2015. US-based contractor Flatiron has won a US$157 million design and build contract for an interchange in the Canadian city of Winnipeg, in the province of Manitoba.
The project, for owner Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation, will replace the existing loop-ramp interchange for Provincial Trunk Highways 59 and 101.
