Bulgarian highways moving ahead

Bulgaria's road system is underdeveloped and its highway network is seeing significant investment from the EU in terms of funding and expertise.

Bulgaria's road system is underdeveloped and its highway network is seeing significant investment from the EU in terms of funding and expertise. Work on two key highway sections now looks set to move forward. One contract is for the construction of a 34km section of the Maritsa highway. This has been awarded to a consortium comprising Austrian firm Porr Technobau und Umwelt and Bulgarian company Patnostroitelna Tehnika. This consortium won the bidding process in the face of strong competition with a package worth €62.4 million. Meanwhile the tender process for a 17km section of Bulgaria's Struma highway has attracted 19 bidders. The road will connect Dupnitsa with Dolna Dikanya.

  • Tender process underway for Polish road projects

    The tender process is underway for two major projects in Poland. One project involves constructing three sections of the new southern ring road around Polish capital Warsaw. Building the 18.5km stretch that comprises the three sections is expected to cost in the region of €1.6 billion. The Polish General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) says that bids have to be submitted by 10th October 2014.   • STRABAG working on Slovakian highway

    A consortium is now working on the construction of one stretch of Slovakia’s D1 highway. The section lies between Hričovské Podhradie and Lietavská Lúčka and the project is worth €427 million. The consortium comprises four companies; with Doprastav, Váhostav and STRABAG all holding equal 32% stakes of the contract and Metrostav having a minority 4% share. The work being carried out by Doprastav, Váhostav and STRABAG is equivalent to some €140 million each. The construction work is expected to take 48 months
