Approval for new Zealand link

Official approval has been given for New Zealand's new Waterview highway project. The project is estimated to be worth some US$1.53 billion (NZ$1.85 billion).

Official approval has been given for New Zealand's new Waterview highway project. The project is estimated to be worth some US$1.53 billion (NZ$1.85 billion). The 8km highway section will run from Te Atatu and St Lukes. The work involves widening a stretch of the existing Northwestern Motorway and bidding is expected to commence in 2012 with work due to start in 2013.

    New Zealand prime minister John Key led an official ground-breaking ceremony this week to allow the start of excavation work for two new 2.4km-long motorway tunnels beneath suburban Auckland. The Waterview Connection project is on schedule to begin its main construction phase next year, and the prime minister was on hand to turn the first soil for a 30m-deep trench which is needed to allow access for the tunnels’ southern approach trench in the west Auckland suburb of Owairaka.

    The East-West highway connection project in Auckland is proving controversial. Several community groups are lodging appeals against the US$1.37 billion (NZ$1.85 billion) project, despite it having been approved recently by the New Zealand: Government. The groups appealing against the highway link project now include Jackson Electrical, Mercury Energy, the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society, iwi Ngati Whatua and The Onehunga Enhancement Society (TOES).
