Advancing asphalt plant technology
June 9, 2016
Advances in asphalt plant technology were in major evidence at the bauma 2016 exhibition in Munich - Mike Woof writes One of the most apparent developments at bauma 2016 was the strong focus on asphalt plant technology. The massive physical presence of the asphalt plants could be seen from a distance, right across the showground, particularly the 50m-high machine Benninghoven had opted to exhibit. However, other plant systems from rival firms Ammann, Lintec and Marini, as well as Turkish company E-MAK, c

MIT researchers focus on stronger cement, the natural way
June 6, 2016
Scientists at MIT - the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in the United States - have reportedly developed a type of concrete that may be stronger and more durable than traditional cement. According to the MIT News, a paper recently published in the journal Construction and Building Materials, scientists compared cement paste with the structure of natural materials including bones, shells and sea sponges. These are exceptionally strong because of the way they are arranged at both the microscopic lev
Concrete cancer cure found?
May 26, 2016
Researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada believe they may have discovered a cure for ‘concrete cancer’, which afflicts many concrete structures. The Canadian claims for a concrete cancer cure revolve around a novel method for producing concrete using discarded glass. Researchers at UBC’s Okanagan campus were able to reduce the chemical reaction that previously caused glass-fed concrete to weaken, expand and crack. This reaction is widely referred to as concrete cancer. “Every

Quicker Plant set up with Superior
May 20, 2016
Superior Industries has developed a new system that speeds up the tricky operation of levelling a portable quarry plant installation. This new feature automatically levels a plant once the machinery is raised to the necessary height. Previously operators would have to adjust cribbing and jacks until a level plant was achieved. This operation has to be carried out properly as when operating in an uneven environment, plants can produce material that is out of specification, as well as suffering overstresse
