Connected Construction

A road design study is now being carried out for Latvian capital Riga. The study will evaluate solutions for connecting parts of the city and its port to the main Latvian highway network. The study will be part-funded by the EU’s TEN-T Programme, which is providing close to €1.8 million. The project will be completed by the 31st December 2015 and involves the construction of a new link to the Freeport of Riga that will carry heavy goods vehicles, reducing traffic volumes and congestion in the historic city

Germany’s Transport Ministry is to test Building Information Modelling (BIM) systems in two key infrastructure projects. The two pilot projects will be for the road and rail sectors. The technology provides a digital 3D model of the construction project which will allow for the planning, construction and usage of the project to be presented. Arab partners have been secured as co-investors for construction of the third and fourth phase of Moscow’s Central Ring Road, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported. Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), made the announcement earlier this month during a meeting of the State Council's presidium in Novosibirsk, chaired by president Vladimir Putin. Dmitriev did not name the Arab partners but said they “have confirmed their desire” to invest in the third and fourth phases.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has awarded a highway widening contract worth US$202 million (INR 12.32 billion) to IL&FS Engineering and Construction Company. IL&FS will widen to four lanes 127km of the Patna-Gaya-Dobhi section of NH-83 in the north eastern Indian state of Bihar. The project is due for completion in three years and it will be undertaken under the Official Development Assistance Loans programme of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Bentley Systems has announced the project finalists in its 2014 Be Inspired Awards competition. The awards highlight the achievements made by users of Bentley software in improving and sustaining infrastructure. Nine independent panels of jurors, comprising distinguished industry experts, selected the 54 finalists from nominations submitted by organisations in 49 countries. The winners of the Be Inspired Awards will be announced at The Year in Infrastructure 2014 Conference, which takes place November 4th
