Thailand road repairs to tackle flood damage

Serious flooding in Southern Thailand has caused extensive damage to roads and highways. In a bid to restore these transport links the country’s Highways Department's Highways Maintenance Management Bureau has set a budget close to US$103 million.

Serious flooding in Southern Thailand has caused extensive damage to roads and highways. In a bid to restore these transport links the country’s Highways Department's Highways Maintenance Management Bureau has set a budget close to US$103 million. In all 348 bridges and 134 sections of roads have to be rebuilt or repaired. The plans call for the construction of culverts under 38 road sections that suffer from regular flooding. The work should be complete by 2018.

The plans call for 175km of roads to be rebuilt in 2019, with the budget for the work set at US$105 million. This represents a substantial gain in road repairs over the 2018 plan, for which the budget has been just $60 million. For the 2019-2024 period, a road repair plan of $1.32 billion is being set for the Irkutsk Region.
