Thailand road repairs to tackle flood damage

Serious flooding in Southern Thailand has caused extensive damage to roads and highways. In a bid to restore these transport links the country’s Highways Department's Highways Maintenance Management Bureau has set a budget close to US$103 million.

Serious flooding in Southern Thailand has caused extensive damage to roads and highways. In a bid to restore these transport links the country’s Highways Department's Highways Maintenance Management Bureau has set a budget close to US$103 million. In all 348 bridges and 134 sections of roads have to be rebuilt or repaired. The plans call for the construction of culverts under 38 road sections that suffer from regular flooding. The work should be complete by 2018.

    It was “dirty work” for drainage engineers from Lanes Group in the UK when they recently removed 400tonnes of silt and debris from a culvert in northern England. Before sludge removal started, the 3m-wide concrete box culvert under the A38 on the outskirts of the city of Derby had been full almost to its roof. Lanes Group's East Midlands depot, based in Derby, desilted the culvert in a 17-day operation for North Midland Construction, working for Highways England, under its civil engineering framework.

    Kazakhstan is setting out a budget for road repair and upgrade work, in a bid to improve the country’s transport network. The Ministry of Investment and Development has plans to carry out works to 1,700km of Kazakhstan’s primary road links during 2019. The programme of works is expected to cost US$222.8 million. A similar road repair programme with a slightly smaller budget was carried out during 2018.
