Variable speed electric compressors

Atlas Copco is introducing mobile electric Variable Speed Drive (VSD) air compressors to its E-Air range. These electric compressors are said to suit working in a low emission zone. The absence of diesel emissions, combined with the low noise levels (as low as 61dB(A)), suits the E-Air range for underground applications like tunnelling, as air ventilation is a part of their running costs. Atlas Copco’s new electric compressors offer zero emissions performance
161 Atlas Copco is introducing mobile electric Variable Speed Drive (VSD) air compressors to its E-Air range. These electric compressors are said to suit working in a low emission zone. The absence of diesel emissions, combined with the low noise levels (as low as 61dB(A)), suits the E-Air range for underground applications like tunnelling, as air ventilation is a part of their running costs. While the fixed-speed electric compressor needs a start-up current peak, the VSD electric range offers versatility.

Efficiency is aided by the optimal combination of the Variable Speed Drive and permanent magnet motor. The compressor’s integrated VSD-driven permanent magnet electric motor requires only low power for start-up, so there is no need to oversize the power supply. In addition, there is also no need to oversize the pneumatic tools. The Variable Speed Drive and permanent magnet motor also make an important contribution to efficiency.

When working in a residential area or an enclosed space such as a subway, the E-Air range provides a reliable flow of compressed air without any emissions. This lowers the need for air ventilation in any underground application, a significant part of the running costs when using diesel air compressors.

VSD E-Air compressors are smaller and lighter than equivalent diesel air compressors. The new VSD E-Air range features Atlas Copco’s PACE system (Pressure Adjusted through Cognitive Electronics). This enables users to control the pressure between 5 and 12bar, in precise 0.1bar increments.

The latest developments in drilling rigs can help boost efficiency in quarry producion applications - Mike Woof reports. Efficient drilling and blasting operations can have a huge impact on production costs in quarrying. Accuracy of hole direction and depth, as well as optimum blast design and explosives use, are critical for efficient blasting work. Ineffective blasting can result in high quantities of fines of low commercial value as well as over-sized material requiring secondary breaking. This impacts o
