3220 Parsons will provide a maintenance decision support system (MDSS) and automatic vehicle location system on 650 snowplows in the US state of Nebraska.

Under the five-year contract, Parsons will use MDSS informatics technology developed by 253 Iteris. The system uses data from remote weather information stations, as well as temperature data from Parsons-equipped snowplows to develop precision treatment recommendations for a specific segment of road.

These recommendations are sent to the in-vehicle Parsons touchscreen unit along with actual weather maps. This process allows for roadway salt and other chemicals to be applied at an optimum time and at a prescribed volume before an incoming weather event. This reduces the need for retreatments, lowers material, fuel and maintenance costs as well as overtime labour.

Twin-layer paving offers high quality, long lasting road surfaces to be constructed. Paver manufacturer Dynapac is one of the pioneers of the twin-layer paving technique, which it calls Compactasphalt. According to Dynapac this method offers major benefits to contractors and clients alike as roads surfaced using this technique last longer and are cheaper to maintain. To ensure contractors have maximum utilisation of their machines, Dynapac offers a modular paver system that can be operated using the convent

Integrated construction software offers an effective planning solution - *Mark Nichols writes. In a world where resources are limited, 20 year designing and building in a sustainable way is more critical than ever. By employing today's software tools it is possible to reduce the total cost of construction of a new highway, while reducing operating costs and environmental impacts. The path to achieving the greatest gains is to take a holistic approach to the plan, design, construct and operate process from t

Lower temperature mixes – a key advance in bitumen technology - Kristina Smith reports Warm and cold mix asphalts were not on the original agenda for this year’s Eurasphalt & Eurobitume Congress, being held in Istanbul in June. But when the organisers took a look through the papers submitted for their sustainability-themed event, they realised that this is one of the industry’s hottest topics. “We hadn’t quite anticipated the high level of research in this area,” says E&E’s technical programme committee c
  • New ice detection technology for motorists

A new technology developed by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland provides drivers with warnings of black ice on the roads. This automatic detection system will warn a driver in advance that a road is dangerous due to the presence of ice. According to VTT, this uses a novel, real-time method of obtaining information on road surface friction and employs data collected from the car’s in-built sensors. This compares the speeds of the drive shafts and axles in an array of driving conditions, with an al
