The new Trenchlink system is said to allow faster and more efficient utilities works or road repairs. The system comprises interlocking, ductile iron, skid-resistant road plates and is designed to cover utility trenches without the need for a temporary asphalt cover. According to the manufacturer, Trenchlink increases the productivity of roadworks teams as it secures utility trenches quickly and safely, saving time, materials and money.

The supplier, Actavo, says that time can be saved as Trenchlink makes the road immediately passable and is able to bear loads of up to 44tonnes. It also allows teams to quickly resume work without having to remove temporary asphalt surfaces from trenches. This is advantageous for the contractor, often working within restricted hours enforced by local authorities, as well as for drivers. Trenchlink is said to be highly versatile and is available in widths from 300mm to 500mm.

New generation wheeled pavers aimed at use in territories such as the UK, Italy, South Africa and Southern Germany are now coming to market. Pavers in these countries are often expected to be driven from one part of a site to another or for short distances, which is why the additional mobility of the wheeled machine is preferred in many instances over similarly-sized tracked models. This preference for wheeled units comes in spite of the greater stability offered by tracked machines. BOMAG, Caterpillar and

Innovative developments are pushing forward concrete road construction techniques. The concrete road sector looks to benefit from some key innovations and developments now coming to market or being employed in different territories. Irregular weather and environmental conditions can alter the rate at which concrete cures, with a risk of plastic shrinkage cracks that can compromise the integrity of a pavement. Contractors cannot control the environmental conditions of a paving project and when weather patter
  • Surface quality a key trend in asphalt paving

Improved surface quality and improved machine design are key trends in the asphalt paving sector, Mike Woof reports There is a big difference in asphalt paving techniques in North America and Europe. In North America, the need to construct long stretches of highway quickly resulted in wide pavers offering high throughput capacity, with compaction equipment then being used to achieve the required density of the various courses. In Europe's highway construction projects, distances tend to be shorter and contr
