Weigh-in-motion market set to rise globally

The analyst Research and Markets predicts a compound annual growth rate of 10 per cent up to 2027 with Europe leading the demand.

The global weigh-in-motion system market will rise from US$1.1 billion this year to $1.8 billion by 2027, according to a report from Research and Markets.

WiM system data can be used to schedule repairs, reduce road maintenance outlay and improve road condition through predictive analysis.

The analyst predicts a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10 per cent during the forecast period with Europe continuing to have the highest demand for weigh-in-motion (WiM) systems.

"With increasing expenditures by regional governments for transportation infrastructure development projects on national and international roads, the region is anticipated to be a key revenue pocket for the WiM market," Research and Markets says.

"The high-speed WiM systems, which costs 50-60 per cent more than low-speed systems, dominates Europe and the free trade agreements between European Union member states have a significant role in Europe's domination."

The report cites the intention of various countries, including the US, Japan and China, to make transportation safer, more efficient and sustainable, as potential drivers of greater WiM roll-out. A major concern by these countries is the damage to infrastructure caused by overloaded vehicles.

"By permitting real-time information and data flow, a WiM system enables intelligent utilisation of the transportation infrastructure and vehicles currently in use," the report says.

WiM will be driven "throughout the forecast period by the rising demand for ITS around the world,” the report notes. "As a result, it is anticipated that over the forecast period, the segment of traffic data collection would be the fastest growing in the WiM market.”
