Australia’s Victoria State is setting out plans for upgrade work to the historic Great Ocean Road. Improvements costing US$198 million (A$272.4 million) will be carried out to the road, as well as some link roads running inland.

The Great Ocean Road was constructed largely by hand in the interwar period, providing access to a coastal area that had previously only been accessible by sea or by very rough local trails. The work was carried out as part of a programme to provide jobs. This historic route is popular with tourists as it winds along the coastline and provides access to some of the most scenic areas of Victoria State.
