New bridges underway for Panama Canal

Panama is working on projects to construct two new bridge crossings over the Panama Canal. According to the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), work is progressing well on the project to build the third bridge over the Canal. The project is costing around US$570 million, of which USD 382mn have been already allocated. The bridge is due for completion in 2017. Panama is working on projects to construct two new bridge crossings over the Panama Canal. According to the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), work is progressing well on the project to build the third bridge over the Canal. The project is costing around US$570 million, of which USD 382mn have been already allocated. The bridge is due for completion in 2017. Meanwhile Panama's Ministry of Public Works (MOP) is opening the tender process to build select the project manager for the project to build the fourth bridge over the Panama Canal. The contract involves qualified technical assistance services to ensure the project is developed to the necessary specifications. The proposals will be received until 30th November 2015.

    Construction work for the fourth bridge crossing over the Panama Canal is expected to commence in late 2019. The project is costing US$1.42 billion and the new bridge will be built by a Chinese contracting consortium comprising China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) and China Communications Construction Company (CCCC). The 6.5km bridge will feature three lanes in either direction, as well as two light rail tracks.
