Montenegro highway budget revealed

Chinese contractor China Roads and Bridges Company (CRBC) is spending €194 million to construct a key stretch of Montenegro’s Bar-Boljare highway during 2017. The Exim Bank in China is providing a loan facility worth €889.3 million to Montenegro’s Government to pay for the project. The loan is being provided over a 20-year period. The Exim Bank in China is providing a loan facility worth €889.3 million to Montenegro’s Government to pay for the project. The loan is being provided over a 20-year period. This key stretch of the Bar-Boljare highway is 40km long and presents many technical challenges as it is one of the most complex sections of the route. This stretch will include 13 bridges, 16 tunnels, four interchanges and five viaducts.

    Construction of Montenegro’s Bar-Boljare motorway now looks likely to cost substantially more than originally planned. The project was originally budgeted at €80 million however Montenegro’s Ministry of Transport has now revealed that the work will have a pricetag some €15 million greater, totalling €95 million.     Israeli firm Solel Boneh is one of the preferred bidders for a toll road project in Montenegro, along with an as yet un-named European company. The tender is worth €1 billion and is for a 30 year concession for a 170km toll road. The project is Montenegro’s first PPP and is also the country’s largest ever infrastructure package. The road will run from Boljare on the Serbian border and the Adriatic Sea port of Bar.
