Major plan for Bolivian highway expansion underway

Bolivia has a major programme of highway expansion and improvements underway at present in a plan designed to improve the country’s transport links. The programme includes 16 double-lane highways being built, costing some US$1.85 billion in all. The work is being managed by the state-run road administration company ABC. The roads will improve connections to La Paz, Oruro, Santa Cruz and Cochabamba. The road between La Paz and Oruro is 80% finished. The other projects will be finished between 2015 and 2018.

The highways include: La Paz-Oruro; Confital-Bombeo; Caracollo-Confital- Bombeo-Cruce Angostura; Cruce Angostura-Colomi; Putintiti-Villa Tunari; Villa Tunari-Chimore; Puente Chimore-Puente Mariposas-Ivirgarzama; Ivirgarzama-Puente Mamorecito-Puente Ichilo; Puente Ichilo-Yapacani; Yapacani-Montero; Sacaba-Chinata; Quillacollo-Suticollo; Rio Seco-Huarina; Huarina-Achacachi; and Huarina-Tiquina.

    Work is close to completion on a new inter-ocean highway in Honduras. This 392km road runs between the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Oceans and is at present around 80% complete. Called the Canal Seco, this new road should be finished in the first quarter of 2017. Work still needs to be carried out on a 100km long section featuring four lanes. This portion of the project is costing some US$300 million, with funding being provided by CABEI.
