Extra funding will help improve the road link connecting Malawi and Zambia. The African Development Fund (ADF) is providing a loan worth US$73.6 million for the fourth phase of the Multinational Nacala Road Corridor Development project. This route connects Malawi and Zambia and is of major economic importance to both nations, but particularly for Malawi as its transport connections with its neighbours are not well developed. The ADF is providing loans of $7.7 million to Zambia and a loan of $65 million to Malawi, reflecting the relative condition of their economies. Zambia’s copper mining industry has provided steady income in recent years while Malawi’s economy is far more restricted. In addition Malawi will receive a further $900,000 grant from the ADF for the Nacala Road Corridor Development project, reflecting its importance for the country’s future growth.

Normally in hilly ground, we would use the excavated soil from the cuttings to fill the valleys," says Bogdan Sgarcitu, External Affairs Manager of construction company Bechtel. "But on this stretch the clay-like soil cannot be compacted, so we've had to use many more piles than normal: in just three months we installed more than 500, some drilled as deep as 24m. We've also had to transport millions of tonnes of materials over some less-than-perfect infrastructure."

In Zimbabwe work is being planned for the road connecting the country’s second city Bulawayo with Tsholotsho. This route is of importance as it connects through to the Hwange Game Reserve and also to Victoria Falls, both of which are key tourist destinations within Zimbabwe. The route also connects with Zimbabwe’s border crossing to neighbouring Zambia at Victoria Falls. So far only 50km of this 112km route has been upgraded but the new plans will see the entire route benefiting from major improvements. Wor
