Upgrade work starts on junction of London’s orbital motorway M25

Work has started on a €136 million road improvement project on the UK’s London ring road, the M25 motorway. Work has started on a €136 million road improvement project on the UK’s London ring road, the M25 motorway.

Crews from 1146 Balfour Beatty and 2296 Skanska have moved onto the interchange between the A13 national road and the M25 at junction 30 near Thurrock in the county Essex.

The A13 on approach to the junction will be widened to four lanes in each direction and the junction itself will have dedicated link roads between the M25 and the A13.

“Traffic at the junction is expected to grow by up to a quarter by 2032 and safety at the junction is also a concern,” said project manager Lizzie Pauling, who is part of the 2309 Highways Agency, responsible for roads in England. “The project will add vital extra capacity to the junction and improve safety by almost a fifth.”

Roadworks began on February 27 and completion is expected in late 2016. Work will be called off in two main phases; first on the A13 and then, from January 2016 on the junction itself.

Several new gantries carrying the latest motorway technology will be installed along the major roundabout at the A13, A282 Dartford Crossing and M25.Lighting columns and traffic signals

Meanwhile, the Highways Agency appointed Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering to a €15.7 million contract to improve junction 12 of the M40 motorway in England.
