Türkmenbaşi is Turkmenistan's only port and sea link to the West. A ferry service connects Türkmenbaşi to Baku, Azerbaijan.

The government also has plans to make Turkmenbashi a centre for tourism and announced in 2007 plans to spend $1 billion and seek additional foreign investment to create a major tourist resort on the Caspian Sea.
