Major road projects are underway in Slovakia at present and include the construction of the D1 and R2 highway routes. However, the construction of the D1 between Hubova and Ivachnova now looks to be delayed by up to five years.

The contractor is requesting an increase in the price of the work. Building the link was originally expected to cost €227 million but rose to €290 million and now looks likely to hit  €307 million. The work is being carried out for the Slovakian road firm NDS by a consortium comprising Vahostav-SK and OHL ZS.

Meanwhile, NDS has awarded a € 132.6 million package of works to Eurovia CS and Eurovia SK for a stretch of the R2 route connecting Kosice, Saca - Kosicke Olsany. The majority of the funding will be supplied by the EU and the 14.3km section of road will form part of the Via Carpatia corridor.

In addition, NDS is analysing the tender process for the project to extend the stretch of the D1 between capital Bratislava and Triblavina. The section will also link the D1 with the D4, with the work expected to cost €127 million and take 40 months to complete.
