Russian road rebuilding programme

The Russian Ministry of Transport is setting out a major programme of transport infrastructure improvements, with a budget of US$175.56 billion being planned. Russia has 511,000km of regional and municipal roads at present, around 43% of the country's total network. The aim is to increase the percentage of roads with federal and municipal status to 50%, which will require around 40,000km of roads to be upgraded by 2024. The Russian Ministry of Transport is setting out a major programme of transport infrastructure improvements, with a budget of US$175.56 billion being planned. Russia has 511,000km of regional and municipal roads at present, around 43% of the country's total network. The aim is to increase the percentage of roads with federal and municipal status to 50%, which will require around 40,000km of roads to be upgraded by 2024.


The Russian Federal Government will give the regional authorities the necessary funding, with the 40 regions featuring the worst roads to be prioritised. The plan is for 85% of Russia's urban roads to meet necessary standards. The plan calls for 33 new ridges to be constructed on roads and highways linking Russia's main cities as well as 29 city bypasses and 514 overpasses over rail lines.

Russia’s Federal road transport agency (7931 Rosavtodor) says that phase one of its road development programme will be complete by 2021. The plan calls for 84% of federal motorways o be upgraded by 2019. The programme also calls for 84% of the country’s entire road network to meet quality and safety standards by 2025.
