One of the largest projects is the 3,000km northern international highway from Sullana, a city and urban area of around 440,000, to the border with Ecuador. The highway is expected to be finished by the end of next year.

General elections took place on 10 April to determine the president, vice-presidents, composition of the Congress and the representatives of the Andean Parliament.
