Nepal tunnel link due for construction

Construction work will commence soon on Nepal’s Naubise-Nagdhunga road tunnel project. The final design for the 2.6km link has yet to be approved. Funding for the project is being provided by a loan from the Japanese Government. The project is being built by the contractor Nippon Koei and is expected to cost US$176.1 million.

    Funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will help with the construction of a new tunnel as well as road links in Nepal. The US$168.56 million funding package comes in the shape of a loan to Nepal’s Government. This will be used to pay for the construction of a 2.5km tunnel that will link Nagdhunga with Naubise.     A new stretch of highway is now open to traffic in Nepal. The Nepalthok-Khurkot Road recently had its official opening. Some US$46.2 million was spent on the section of highway, with much of the funding being provided by the Japanese Government. The Nepalthok-Khurkot section of road forms part of a larger project and is Phase 3, Part-I of the Banepa-Sindhuli-Bardibas BP highway.
