Myanmar roads and bridges improvement budget set

Myanmar’s Ministry of Construction in Myanmar has set a budget for road and bridge improvement works for the April 2018-September 2018 period. US$181.5 million will be spent improving transport infrastructure in this period. Five road upgrade projects and 41 bridge improvement works are being planned. So far improvements are being carried out to three road links and 17 bridges.

    There has been little change in road safety standards in Myanmar, despite recent efforts by the authorities. There has been a drop in overall crashes to 12,084 for the first nine months of 2019, compared with 12,979 for the same period in 2018.   • Myanmar elevated expressway project

    Discussions are being held in Myanmar with regard to the country’s Elevated Expressway Project. The Myanmar Government has been in talks with the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The project is expected to cost US$400 million, with work due to commence in 2019 and likely to require 24-36 months to complete. Building the 24km expressway will improve transport between the north and south of Yangon City. The project will be carried out under the PPP model, with IFC advising on the work.

    Construction work on the road connecting the Bolivian towns of Riberalta and Rurrenabaque has been halted. The project to upgrade Bolivia’s Route 8 is being carried out by a Chinese contractor. Work started on the project in 2014 and is supposed to be complete in 2020 but is said to be significantly behind schedule, with only 11% of the planned work having been carried out.
