Loans will be used to pay for work to develop a stretch of the Trans-Sahara road in Mali. The African Development Bank and the African Development Fund are providing the necessary loans. The Mali Government has given approval for the legal structure covering the US$32 million loan package being provided.

The funding package will help to pay for work on a 285km stretch of the route in Mali. Building the Trans-Sahara route is of key importance for North and West Africa. The road link will provide direct transport connections for six nations, improving transport between Algeria’s capital Algiers and Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, and its economic centre, Lagos. However, improvements to the Trans-Sahara route will help deliver an economic boost to numerous neighbouring nations also.
