India tunnel project bids being received

Bidding has been strong for a major tunnel project in India. The project, to construct the Zojila Tunnel in Jammu & Kashmir, is expected to cost in the order of US$1.56 billion. A low bid for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the Zojila tunnel project was received from IL&FS Transportation Networks (ITNL). Bidding has been strong for a major tunnel project in India. The project, to construct the Zojila Tunnel in Jammu & Kashmir, is expected to cost in the order of US$1.56 billion. A low bid for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the Zojila tunnel project was received from 3148 IL&FS Transportation Networks (ITNL). Other bids came from 1234 Reliance Infrastructure, Jaiprakash Associates, and 6458 Larsen & Toubro. The bidding process for the project has been managed by India’s National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDC).

The project has been awarded to local road development firm IRB Infrastructure Developers (IRB). The 14.08km tunnel is expected to take seven years to complete. The concession for the project is for 22 years. As part of the deal, IRB will oversee the construction of 10.8km of approach roads on Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri Road in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) cancelled the bid process for the US$1.46 billionn Zozila tunnel project on National Highway 1 in Jammu & Kashmir.     The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has awarded a highway widening contract worth US$202 million (INR 12.32 billion) to IL&FS Engineering and Construction Company. IL&FS will widen to four lanes 127km of the Patna-Gaya-Dobhi section of NH-83 in the north eastern Indian state of Bihar. The project is due for completion in three years and it will be undertaken under the Official Development Assistance Loans programme of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
