India plans multi-billion $ road expansion programme

India is working on plans for a major programme of road development works. This will form part of India’s Vision 2047 plan and is intended to further improve transport across the country.

The existing Bharatmala plan in 2017 has targeted the construction of 10,000km of highways/year. The aim was to build nearly 75,000km of highways, of which 34,800km have been approved (with an estimated cost exceeding US$ 65 billion) and over 15,000km have been built.
