India mega highway project connecting cities

India’s Road Transport and Highways Ministry is working on plans for a new high speed road link connecting the capital, New Delhi, with the key economic and industrial centre, Mumbai. India’s Road Transport and Highways Ministry is working on plans for a new high speed road link connecting the capital, New Delhi, with the key economic and industrial centre, Mumbai. The route will form part of the country’s new highway network and is expected to cost in the order of US$15.3 billion to construct. In addition, another highway project has been proposed that will be linked to the planned New Delhi Mumbai route. The new inter-city highway will be tolled and will reduce travel times between New Delhi and Mumbai and is expected to help boost transport and trade. Plans for the financing model envisaged for this mega-project have yet to be revealed however.

    The opening of a new road link in Nicaragua will reduce journey times between capital Managua and El Guasaule, which lies on the border with Honduras. The road connects La Paz Centro, Malpaisillo and Villa 15 de Julio. Heavy vehicles previously had to take a more circuitous route that was also longer, so the new road will help cut transport costs.     Mozambique’s Maputo-Catembe Bridge is due to open shortly and will become Africa’s longest suspension bridge. The 3km bridge will form part of the road connection between Maputo, Mozambique’s capital, and Catembe. The bridge is costing over US$700 million, with much of the necessary funding being provided by the Export Import Bank of China. The new bridge will improve transport and reduce journey times for drivers, who currently have to rely on ferries travelling between Maputo and Catembe.
