India mega highway project connecting cities

India’s Road Transport and Highways Ministry is working on plans for a new high speed road link connecting the capital, New Delhi, with the key economic and industrial centre, Mumbai. The route will form part of the country’s new highway network and is expected to cost in the order of US$15.3 billion to construct. In addition, another highway project has been proposed that will be linked to the planned New Delhi Mumbai route. The new inter-city highway will be tolled and will reduce travel times between New Delhi and Mumbai and is expected to help boost transport and trade. Plans for the financing model envisaged for this mega-project have yet to be revealed however.

  • China’s mega highway project planned

    Plans have been unveiled in China for a new mega highway project. A 452km link will is envisaged that will run from Panzhihua to Yibin New City in Sichuan. Because of the complex geography of the area, the highway will feature a total of 132 tunnels, which will measure 238km in all. The predicted cost of the highway is US$13.44 billion. The tunnels are a major reason for the high price of the project as they will increase the complexity of the work.

    Road development work continues in India, with the country planning its highway infrastructure expansion. The projects are being planned by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). A new 127km highway will connect Lucknow with Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh. The four lane route will also pass through Ayyubganj and Musafirkhana and is expected to cost in the region of US$425.3 million to construct. The work is being carried out by the contractor Dilip Buildon.
