India highway projects being taken over

A Canadian firm is taking over three highways in India from Essel Highways. The US$472.8 million deal is for the the Essel Devanahalli Tollway in Karnataka state, the Lebad-Jaora highway in Madhya Pradesh and Essel Dichpally Tollway in Telangana. The Canadian company is Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ)

    India’s federal government has sanctioned the construction or upgrading of 2,500km of national level roads in Telangana state. Work should include another ring road around the capital Hyderabad, according to a report in the Times of India newspaper. The head of the state government, chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, said state planning officials will need to come up with a detailed forward plan for transportation in the new state.     A loan package from the World Bank will help pay for a major rural road programme in India. The US$210 million loan is being used for rural road development in Madhya Pradesh State. The upgrade work will see a total of 10,000km of gravels roads in Madhya Pradesh State being surfaced with asphalt, while a further 510km of new rural roads will be built in the state and will be surfaced with asphalt. This will be for the Madhya Pradesh Rural Connectivity Project.
