Hamburg ponders A1 motorway widening to eight lanes

The northern German city of Hamburg is planning to expand the A1 motorway to eight lanes in the southeast. Widening should take place on the 8km-long stretch between Harburg and the Hamburg-Südost triangle, according to a report in the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung. Two bridges over the Norderelbe and Süderelbe rivers are likely to be replaced and the Hamburg-Süd intersection would be rebuilt. Planning approval, however, is likely to begin in two years and work would start by the end of 2024.
