Grupo Rubau awarded a section of Poland’s S-61 Expressway project

Spanish contractor Grupo Rubau has won a €120 million deal for construction of a 19.4km section of the S-61 motorway in Poland. Work on the stretch connecting Ostrow Mazowiecka and Szczuczyn will be finished in 31 months.

Spanish contractor Grupo Rubau has won a €120 million deal for construction of a 19.4km section of the S-61 motorway in Poland.


Work on the stretch connecting Ostrow Mazowiecka and Szczuczyn will be finished in 31 months.

The S-61, still under construction, runs from the Lithuanian border in the northeast, connecting Lituania’s A5 near Budzisko, to intersect express road S8 near Ostrów Mazowiecka. When finished it will be part of the Via Baltica – European Route E67.

The E67 runs from Prague in the Czech Republic to Helsinki in Finland by way of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. It goes via Prague, Wrocław, Warsaw, Kaunas, Panevėžys, Riga, Tallinn and Helsinki. However, only the 970km stretch between Warsaw and Tallinn is known as he Via Baltica.

The Kerch Strait bridge spans the Black Sea, connecting Russia’s Taman Peninsula in Krasnodar with Crimea, the latter having been controversially annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014. The official opening of the 19km-long bridge was carried out by Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, who drove across the link in a Russian-manufactured Kamaz truck to reach the city of Kerch.

The country’s General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) has had four offers worth between €194 million and €259 million for the construction of the tunnel. The new link is planned to be built in Swinoujscie and will run under the Swina River to Uznam Island with Wolin Island.
