EU Cohesion Fund invests in Slovakia D1 motorway

The European Cohesion Fund is investing nearly €279 million in construction of the west-south deviation of the D1 motorway in Slovakia. The European Cohesion Fund is investing nearly €279 million in construction of the west-south deviation of the D1 motorway in Slovakia.

The EU-funded works include construction of a two-way tunnel, two interchanges, 12 retaining walls, noise barriers and 18 bridges.
 
The 515km cross-country D1 connects the capital Bratislava, along the Danube River close the country’s western border with the Czech Republic, and in the eastern city of Košice. An extension is proposed from Košice to Michalovce, further east and closer to Slovakia’s eastern border with the Ukraine.

With the exceptions of sections in Bratislava, a vignette is required to use the motorway which also forms part of the European routes: E50, E58, E75 and E571.

    Mott MacDonald has been appointed by the Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic to design sections of the R35 and R55 expressways. R35 connects the Bohemia and Moravia regions and runs parallel to the D1 motorway, the longest in the country. Mott MacDonald will design a 5.8km section of the expressway, including three bridges, two interchanges, two roundabouts, four overpasses and one railway viaduct. One watercourse will also be relocated as part of the scheme.
